Plant of the Month: Miscanthus Sinensis Flamingo

Kristen Lackajis • September 19, 2025

September's Plant of the Month is the Miscanthus Sinensis Flamingo - also known as 'eulalia'.

The miscanthus sinensis flamingo is a deciduous grass featuring graceful, elegant, arching green leaves up to 2cm wide, each with a distinct white midrib. In the autumn, the foliage transforms into a beautiful golden orange. Throughout late summer, it produces feathery pink flower plumes that gradually fade to a silvery colour as autumn approaches.

Miscanthus can be grown in any moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Although it does require protection from the excessive winter wetness.

Key Features:

  • Flower Colour: Green leaves within white midrib. Pink flowers transform to golden orange in autumn.
  • Size: Typically grows to 1.8m tall and 1m wide on reaching maturity.
  • Hardiness: Can tolerate a wide range of climates.
  • Sunlight: Full sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Protect from excessive wet.
  • Maintenance: Cut back in early spring ready for new shoots in March/April.

Uses:

  • Borders: Adds height, texture and colour to garden borders.
  • Containers: Suitable for growing in pots.

Planting and Care:

  • Planting: Ideally planted in spring or autumn. Plant 1 – 3 plants per square metre.
  • Watering: Should get plenty of moisture from rainfall so requires little watering.
  • Fertilising: Doesn’t require added fertiliser.
  • Pruning: Cut back dead leaves in late winter/early spring ready for new shoots in March/April.
