Plant of the Month: Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady

Kristen Lackajis • October 2, 2025

With delicate, wispy foliage that resembles plumes of smoke, the Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady is October's Plant of the Month.

Originating from the Netherlands, and commonly known as ‘smoke bush,’ the Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady is a dwarf plant producing a 1.2m bush on reaching maturity.

With attractive, rounded green leaves, this shrub bursts into a spectacular display in the summer months - flowering freely with large plumes of peachy pink flowers that resemble smoke, the foliage turns stunning shades of red and orange before falling in autumn.

Cotinus Coggygria Young Lady’s slow growing nature and compact size makes this deciduous shrub ideal for small gardens to bring both texture and colour. It can be grown in both containers and borders, and thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in sunny or partially shaded areas.

Key Features:

  • Flower Colour: Lush green leaves with smoky pink flowers transform into mahogany hues in autumn.
  • Size: Typically grows to 1.25m tall and 1m wide on reaching maturity.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in most places throughout the UK, even severe winters.
  • Sunlight: Sunny or partially shaded areas.
  • Soil: Thrives in fertile, well-drained, humus rich soil.
  • Maintenance: Minimal pruning required. Hard prune annually in early spring to a low permanent framework.

Uses:

  • Borders: Adds texture and colour to garden borders. Great for compact gardens.
  • Containers: Suitable for growing in pots and borders.

Planting and Care:

  • Planting: Pot-grown plants can be planted at any time of year, whereas bare roots need to be planted between November and March.
  • Watering: Water well and regularly through spring and summer. May only need a little water in autumn.
  • Fertilising: Doesn’t require added fertiliser.
  • Pruning: Prune wayward or crossing branches to maintain a healthy framework. When dormant in the late winter/early spring. Some in the summer/autumn to prevent bleeding of sap.
